The Maisy Test for sexism in kids' shows

V Gender Balance - Gender Representation:

There's about 50/50 men and women
Crew is 31 male and 6 female (credited - I find it hard to believe they managed to make a movie with just 40 people.)

V Gender Freedom:

Pretty stereotypical appearance; girls wear skirts and do their hair, boys have short hair and pants. But it's the 30s?
We don't know if the mother has a job. But we don't know if the father has a job either.
Everyone treats everyone else respectfully.
There is a bit of a fugitive who is being kind to Ana. I can imagine there are people out there who probably start inventing all kinds of sex stories between the fugitive (33) and Ana, who is 7, but I didn't see anything like that. She was helping him, he was being grateful and kind to her. End of story.

V the MacGyver Test

The father doesn't use violence at all, and is a competent dad who cares about his daughters, even though the mother is present. Now, he IS the father of the protagonist. I don't think he is being successful or leadership position - it's kind of not the point here, but he is not portrayed as a loser.

V Gender Safety:

No sexualisation, objectification or sexual violence what so ever.
Now... Isabel is shown to what looked to me torturing a cat and when the cat defends itself, she plays with the blood using it as lipstick... I really don't know what that was all about and how to label it.

V Sexy Lamp Test

X Social Justice and Equality:

I don't think it has much about that. They say it's supposed to happen during the Spanish civil war, but it isn't much spoken about. There are not much values or opinions or messages given. Except that you should do what your grandpa tells you and not pick mushrooms you don't know for sure to be safe. Which is very good advice :-D But not about social justice and equality.

There are no people of color in this movie

(Because this is a Spanish movie... now, theoretically she IS a Latina, but in reality not. She is not a minority.)

X The Gay Test

Now, the world is populated with intelligent women who also have stories worth telling, these stories aren't just told.
One could say she "compromises her sanity", because she kind of goes mad when her special friend (a male) is killed. It's just not a romantic story.
So - I don't know... perhaps it does pass.

V The Willis Test

V The Tauriel Test

Well... she's a kid. She does well in school and gets praise from the teacher. Does that count? :-D

V the Raleigh Becket Test

How to make it better?

There is no need to make it better, but it would be nice with a little more diversity. If someone remakes this, add more diversity and place it somewhere where diversity is appropriate. In 30s Spain there weren't that much diversity.
Also, the same old same old - more people in the crew, especially the on-set crew.

The Pajama Game 👎

I remember watching this when I was little, like 12 or so, and I thought it was fun and entertaining. Now, 35 years later... not so much. I...
